I remember my ex-husband’s grandmother being so proud of the pills she got from her doctor. She looked like the cat that just swallowed the canary. The look on her face when she was told by the doctor that she needed more pills was quite amazing. In later years, my father was the same way. Only my father lost enough of his mind that he couldn’t remember to take them.

In some circles, pills seem to make the world go round. There is certainly enough money to be made by selling them. There is huge money revolved around the pharmaceutical industry and all the peripheral businesses that it encompasses. In 2001, statistics show that people spent $132 billion on 3.1 billion prescriptions. That’s an average of 11 prescriptions for every US resident during that year and it’s predicted to go up. It is estimated that by 2014 we will be spending close to $414 billion on prescriptions in the US. Apparently 46 percent of Americans use at least one prescription drug daily. Astonishing!

The sad thing about pills is that they just manage the symptoms. If you decide to stop taking the pills, you still have whatever it is that caused the medication to be prescribed for you in the first place, unless, of course, it was an antibiotic for a bacterial infection.

Despite all of this there is a percentage of the population that would actually take risk of serious side effects to get something they really want from a medication. Twenty-two percent of women surveyed would take substantial side effect risks, taking a pill that would reverse skin aging. Forty-five percent of men surveyed would take the same risks for an effective pill to prevent or reverse baldness.

If 8.5 million people a year ask for and get a prescription for a specific drug they saw advertised, Big Pharma stands to make a lot of money, indeed. After all, in 1998, the average net profit made by pharmaceutical companies was 18.5 percent. The average net profit rate for Fortune 500 companies is 4.5 percent. It’s perfectly clear where the big money is.

It is an obvious fact that people support pill-taking and have integrated it into our culture. It has become normal behavior to swallow pills 24/7 for whatever ails you. Most people who have symptoms actually welcome the relief that pill-taking brings them. The future of pill-taking is assured because between 1985 and 1999, we have increased prescription drug consumption for central nervous system disorders in our children by 327 percent. After all, we need to keep the pill-taking culture alive and ever expanding. According to Big Pharma, there is absolutely no point in changing food choices and lifestyle habits to improve health.
